It was taken by Hamburg and East Friesland in 1431. Hamburg sold its local holdings to East Friesland in 1453. Emden became a Free City of the Empire in 1595, was transferred to Prussia in 1744, and then became a Free Port in 1751. It was passed to Holland in 1806, Hannover in 1815 and Prussia in 1866.

A seaport on the Ems River adjoining the North Sea was founded in the 9th century and became a pirate lair in the 14th century. It was taken by Hamburg and East Friesland in 1431.
