Joseph Dalton Hooker - Curtis's Botanical Magazine - 1889

Vol. XLV of the Third Series, or vol. CXV of the whole work; 60 engraved and finely, originally excellently hand-coloured plates with vibrant colours, many folded, and with accompanying text. This vol. contains the plants (plates and descriptions) numbered 7033-7092. No binding; faint damp-stain in he top margin, away from the printed images, and, a bit stronger, in the lower margines. Title page, dedication leaf and indexes on English (common) names, and Latin names are all accounted for. The book itself is complete. This volume is from one of the rarer years, when print runs were small. The flowers shown are often extremely beautiful. * Curtis's Botanical Magazine is an illustrated publication which began in 1787. The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the name Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Each of the issues contains a description, in formal yet accessible language, and is renowned for featuring the work of two centuries of botanical illustrators. Many plants received their first publication on the pages, and the description given was enhanced by the keenly detailed illustrations. Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817 – 1911) was a British botanist and explorer in the 19th century. He was a founder of geographical botany and Charles Darwin's closest friend. For twenty years he served as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. ** This lot is part of an important collection that will be auctioned in the coming months through the Catawiki Collection Service.
