'Chapter 43, Kobai' From: 'The Tale of Genji 54 Chapters' - Kunisada II Utagawa (1823-1880) - Japan - Meiji-perioden (1868-1912)

Artist: Kunisada II Utagawa (1823-1880) Title: Chapter 43, Kobai from The Tale of Genji 54 Chapters Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo Date: 1850-1899 Size: 24.1 x 36.1 cm Condition: Slightly trimmed, paper attached on the left of the back. The Tale of Genji is Japan's most famous epic novel written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu (c. 973 –1031). These meetings allowed factions within the court to engage in healthy competition and often gave way to banqueting and revelry. A constant source of inspiration to Japanese artists, the tale received different interpretations depending on the period. In 'The Tale of Genji 54 Chapters' series, Kunisada II presents all fifty-four chapters of 'The Tale of Genji' through iconic scenes.
