Since the 1990s it has developed independently of state funding and produces 500 to 1,000 low-budget films a year. They are films by Africans for Africans; told in a truly unique style, full of myths and symbols. They deal with topics that are part of the daily life of Nigerians: corruption, prostitution, the occult, violence, but also romance and comedies. Pieter Hugo was fascinated by these films and their exuberant drama. For his photographic series, he asked 50 actors to recreate particularly disturbing film scenes that reflected his interpretation of this staged reality.
