Shoji Ueda/Jacque-Henri Lartigue - Shoji Ueda & Jacque-Henri Lartigue - 2013

Shoji Ueda & Jacque-Henri Lartigue Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography/Japanese,English/2013/228*270*18 This catalog was published on the occasion of "Playing with Photographs: Shoji Ueda and Jacques Henri Lartigue," a joint exhibition by Shoji Ueda of Japan and Jacques Henri Lartigue of France, two of the leading photographers of the 20th century. Ueda and Lartigue share the commonality of having maintained a lifelong amateur spirit and continued to genuinely enjoy the act of photography. There are not many photographers like Ueda, who never left the San'in region, and who used the unique environment of the sand dunes as a studio to continue creating modern works that are "rural" but not "country-like". Lartigue's photographs are full of a "spaciousness" and "richness" that cannot be found in the commercial world, and he has continued to enjoy and pursue beautiful moments, so much so that Richard Avedon, an American who achieved spectacular success in the commercial world after World War II, fell in love with his work.
