CAR (C.A. Ruigrok Industrie BV) - Kho Liang Ie - Stol - 305 - krydsfiner

Dutch design: model 305 Kho Liang ie by CAR Katwijk, nl. Fair condition: stains on seat at small chips (see photos), one screw missing Seat height 43 cm (measured at the front of the seat) Width: 44 cm Height: 77 cm Depth: 45 cm About the designer: Kho Liang Ie was born in 1927 to Chinese parents. After Indonesian independence in 1949, he came to the Netherlands, where he initially started studying medicine, which he quickly exchanged for a course at the Institute for Arts Education. After graduating in 1954, he became an employee of the Goed Wonen foundation and was editor of the magazine of the same name from 1957 to 1963. From 1958 until his death he was also active as a furniture designer for Artifort, he also designed for Car Katwijk, Fristho, Bruynzeel and Mosa. Kho Liang Ie was involved from an early stage in the design of the new station building of Schiphol Airport, which arose between 1963 and 1967 as the successor to the old airport at Schiphol-Oost. His starting points were a clear layout for the building, with clear lines of sight and plenty of glass so that the aircraft could be seen well. According to Kho, the nervous traveler should not be distracted by an exuberant setting. He thought that the people, the signposts and the billboards should give color to the building, and was an excessive use of color out of the question. Kho went so far that all works of art that appeared in the building on his initiative were also made in gray or brown plastic or metal He worked for the signage with Benno Wissing of Total Design. Not much of Kho Liang Ie's designs can be found at the current Schiphol; some elements of his work can still be found in arrival halls 1 and 2. He was one of the pioneers of office garden design, he designed Phonogram's offices in Baarn, among other things. In addition, he has also designed the interior of the Cultural Center in Amstelveen as well as the Lijnbaantheater in Rotterdam. After renovations, nothing can be seen of this these days. Much of his furniture has ended up in the collections of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
