'Yama'dôrô' 山灯籠 ('bjerglanterne') - Granit - Japan - Anden halvdel af 1800-tallet (tidlig Meiji-periode)
A charming three-piece granite garden lantern , known as a ‘yama’dôrô’ 山灯籠 (translating to 'mountain lantern'), and occasionally called a ‘ghost lantern’.
It features a broad, irregularly shaped 'roof' crafted from coarse granite. The middle section, or hibukuro, is circular with an attractive reticulated design depicting a crescent moon, set upon a disk-shaped base.
This type of stone lantern 石燈籠 (ishi’dôrô), is typically made from unpolished rock, giving it a natural, uneven, and rustic look. Typically, 'yama’dôrô' are placed in gardens where they can integrate naturally with large boulders, trees, and water elements. Their placement is carefully considered to ensure that they do not overpower the landscape but rather enhance the natural flow and design of the garden.
Approx. dimensions:
Height 39 cm, Width 53 cm, Depth 39 cm.
The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Second half 19th century (Early Meiji period).
It has an appealing outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for many years, with still some moss remnants. Needs to be lifted a little bit from one side so that it stands straight. It is in a very good original condition. Please look at the photos as well for a clear condition reference.
We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport.
When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
