He received numerous awards both in Japan and internationally. In 1965, he became the first Japanese artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As a printmaker, he won the International Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1966. In 1977, he wrote a novel and received Japan's highest literary award, the Akutagawa Prize.
