- Sonia Delaunay (November 14, 1885 - December 5, 1979) was a French artist born to Jewish parents in the Russian Empire, now Ukraine. She was formally trained in Russia and Germany before moving to France, where she spent most of her working life in Paris. She co-founded the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes, with her husband Robert Delaunay. This movement prized color over form, creating a new type of expressive, abstract painting.
Delaunay’s work encompassed a wide range of fields beyond painting, including textile, fashion, and set design. She integrated the concepts of geometric abstraction into her art practice, merging art and everyday life. Her innovative explorations of color and form were integral to the development of abstract art in the early 20th century.
In terms of the valuation of her works, the prices can vary significantly. The price of a print signed by Delaunay at auction can range from 200 to 3,900 €. The estimate for a drawing or watercolor by the artist for auction ranges from 1,500 to 60,000 €. Her works have been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging up to 1,856,557 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork.
