Byōbu foldeskærm - Træ, Bladguld, brokade - Japan - Meiji-perioden (1868-1912)

Remarkable, tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcasing a refined painting on shiny gold leaf that captures a young, beautiful courtesan 美人 (bijin) standing alongside a grand white elephant 象 (zô). The artwork draws inspiration from the Noh play "Eguchi" 江口, which narrates the transformation of the courtesan Eguchi into the Buddhist deity Fugen Bosatsu 普賢菩薩, the patron of women, traditionally depicted with a white elephant. She is elegantly attired in a vibrant, ornately decorated kimono with a sea motif set against a red background, accented by a cobalt blue obi at her waist. Her hair is styled in an elegant updo, enhancing her noble and radiant white complexion and delicate features. Framing the panels are two brocade silk borders - a thin dark golden one and a broad shiny golden one with scrolling foliage design. Framed with black lacquered wood equipped with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions Total width: 170.6 cm (2 x 85.3 cm); Height: 171.4 cm. It is in a fair condition with traces of wear and old restorations. Please have a look at the photos for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
