This is an ink drawing by I Njoman Reneh (c. 1910-1976). The story of the Hunter Lubdhaka (c. 1940). Ink on paper, 38x26cm. Framed and glazed, 55x41cm.
Reneh is one of the pioneers who adopted and embraced the modern Batuan school of painting. He apprenticed with the Batuan master of Wayang painter, I Dewa Putu Kebes. His earliest work was produced around 1933 and many were collected collected by Rudolf Bonnet and the American anthropology couples: Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead.. His works are in the Tropen Museum, Amsterdam; Leiden Ethnology Museum, Museum Puri Lukisan, Bali, Indonesia.
The painting depicts the story of the Hunter Lubdhaka. He stayed awake the entire night and unintentionally stayed up during the night of Shiva.
Condition: excellent for the age
Provenance: Dutch art market.
Recent Sales Records: Reneh is well sought after, as his work is rather rare to find. The most recent auction record (14 May, 2024) eas for an ink drawing by Reneh sold for €3,800.
