Complete Work, with 92 Coloured Botanical Plates A charming field guide to the plants of England which was often referred to as 'the bible of the amateur botanist'. Written by Charles Alexander Johns (1811-1874), an English botanist and priest. This work ran more than fifty editions, such was its popularity. It describes the plants of Britain, with their common and Latin names and their uses. The author also published a number of works on botany and natural history, such as 'Forest Trees of Britain', 'Sea Weeds' and 'The Cottage Flower Garden'. Illustrated with 92 coloured botanical plates including frontispiece by E. N. Gwatkin, and 245 cuts in the text. Published by George Routledge and Sons, Limited, London, 1908. Publishers’ original green bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover with floral design in gilt within gilt line border. Book Dimensions: 22.5 x 14.5 x 4 cm and Number of Pages: 324 including Glossary of Some Botanical Terms, English Index, and Latin Index Condition Light wear to boards’ corners, and minor rubbing to head and foot of spin. Internally; the book is in good condition. A name and date 1920, with pencil on top front free endpaper page. Text is fresh, and light foxing marks to some pages and heavey foxing to some other pages. Split to inner hinges at some places, but pages still tightly held at gutters. The illustrations are in good condition (Please see pictures).
