Edo Monshōshū 江戸紋章集 / Japanske familievåben (Samurai Kamon) 家紋 - Papir - Japan - Shōwa-periode (1926-1989)

This book is a catalogues introducing Japanese family crests (Samurai Kamon), titled "Edo Monshōshū". (Published 1975) Most Japanese families have inherited crests called "kamon" passed down through generations. The distinctive feature of Japanese "kamon" lies in the richness of motifs and the high design quality of patterns. Particularly, kamon is one of the uniquely important cultural aspects for samurai in Japan. Its origins are traced back to the late Heian period (Approx.8th-12th Cent), but it is said to have rapidly spread during the Warring States period (the era of the samurai: Approx.12th-19th Cent). Due to the frequent battles during the Warring States period, the variety of crests increased rapidly as a means to distinguish between friend and foe. Then, during the Edo and Meiji periods, as battles decreased, crests became established as symbols of family lineage, evolving into a cultural tradition. Even today, Japanese people often use their family crests on ceremonial kimono for weddings, funerals, and on tombstones. These motifs include plants, animals, stars, and other elements long cherished in Japan. It is said that there are over 30,000 types of crests when designs are classified in detail. Dimensions: 13 X 18 X 2 cm Weight: 414g Note: It was found that there are 3 handwritten notes. Please see the pictures.
