This skirt was worn by princesses in the olden days. This piece was used in the northern tribes in Ghana particularly the Bimobas and Nanumbas tribe. The skirts were used during marriage ceremonies. Cowrie shells were units of money or currency. The paramount chiefs were then referred as kings. So a daughter from a royal family was referred to as a princess.
Provenance:
Collected in situ by a tropical Dutch doctor in the 1970's.
