Ancient Egyptian Alabaster Vessel
Circa 2700-2200 BC - Old KIngdom
This alabaster vessel boasts an elongated body with a pointed base, allowing it to be securely planted in soft ground or a stand. It has a tubular neck that expands into a thick, rounded rim. Two small lugs at the shoulder would have facilitated handling. Such vessels were often used to store perfumes, oils, or other precious substances in ancient Egypt.
Alabaster, a form of calcium carbonate, was widely used in ancient Egypt for crafting vessels. Egyptians employed alabaster for creating containers, jars, and other items as early as the Predynastic period (circa 6000–3150 BC).
Dimensions: 245mm x 90mm; Weight: 1.2kg
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-1960 Collections.
