The order was established by decree of Josip Broz Tito on August 15, 1943 , together with the medal "For Courage". The order was awarded to servicemen of the SFRY who, in the fight against the enemy, committed actions during which they showed personal courage. The order could be awarded to both military and civilians.
According to official documents, from September 7 , 1944 to December 31, 1985 , 120,636 people were awarded the Order for Courage. The exact number of those awarded and their names remain completely unknown, since part of the documentary information was lost forever during the war.
