Shomei Tomatsu - Nagasaki August 9, 1945 - 1995

Nagasaki August 9, 1945 Shomei Tomatsu Shinchosha/1995/Japanese/200*150*10 Nagasaki August 9, 1945" is a collection of photographs by Shomei Higashimatsu, one of Japan's leading photographers. Shomei Tomatsu first landed in Nagasaki in 1961, 15 years after the atomic bombing. The land of Nagasaki, which was said to be barren of grass and trees for 70 years after the end of the war, began to show signs of recovery thanks to the enormous efforts of the local people, and the whole of Japan seemed to be on the verge of high growth. Since then, he has deepened his friendship with the people of the area and has continued to insist on the tragedy of war and the desire for peace, taking approximately 12,000 photographs over a period of more than 30 years. A collection of his photographs of Nagasaki was published in 1966 as " NAGASAKI" and has been published in various formats since then, but this book is newly edited and composed from 12,000 photographs selected by the photographer himself. On his way home from visiting Tsuyo Kataoka, one of the A-bomb survivors whom Higashimatsu has been following for many years, he said, "Whenever I come to Nagasaki and meet Kataoka-san, I am always taught by her strong will to live. She has a strong will to live.
