Nærøstlige Terrakotta Votiv figur (Ingen mindstepris)
A Near Eastern terracotta statuette most likely depicting a deity. The figure features a smooth head, perhaps implying some kind of headwear, round eyes and a pointed, pronounced nose. Overlapping rows of vertical incisions representing chains are incised upon the collar, beneath which the hands are held together over the chest. Detail has also been added to either side of the neck in form of horizontal lines incised on additional moulding. The reverse is unadorned but features a crack running down one side from the upper back. This piece comes with a custom display stand.
Statuettes with depictions of this type have been recovered across different cultures in Antiquity, usually portraying worshippers and deities. Such artefacts might have been used as votive offerings. A votive offering is an object displayed in a sacred place for religious purposes, in order to gain the favour of supernatural forces. The worshippers considered it to be a gift to the god: pottery, jewellery, weapons, statues, and animals offerings were all possible forms that a votive offering could take.
