A Chinese watercolor painting on pith (rice) paper. China, late Qing dynasty, 19th century, around 1860-80. Rare, particularly in such good condition.
Very good quality Chinese export watercolor painting on rice paper depicting mandarin in a court attire standing on an orange carpet with geometrical and floral pattern followed by a pink border. Later mounted into a veneered wooden frame and glassed.
Oak frame veneered with thick walnut veneer, varnished traditional way with hand applied Schellack (so called 'French polish'). Painting in nice passe-partout with wide border of dark blue textile.

Frame: height - 35,1 cm; width - 25,6 cm; depth - 2,1 cm.
Painting (visible) - 26,3 x 15,9 cm.
Provenance: private collection, Lyon, France.
Pith paper, also known as rice paper, was a popular material used in Chinese paintings during the 19th century.
Conditions report: excellent condition. Minimal discolorations to the pith paper only. No damages visible. Frame in perfect condition. Check pictures for details. Painting was NOT examined out of the frame.
