Photii Myriobiblon sive Biblioteca - ΦΩΤΙΟΥ ΜΥΡΙΟΒΙΒΛΟΝ Η ΒΙΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ PHOTII MYRIOBIBLON, SIVE BIBLIOTHECA LIBRORUM (...)' David Hoeschel and Andreas Schott, Geneva (Oliva Petri (sic) Stephani) 1611 Leather binding. Two-column text in ancient Greek and Latin. 35x22.5x6cm. Browned, stained, part. damaged and rest., title page replaced. Full title: 'Photiu Myriobiblon E Bibliotheke / Photii Myriobiblon, Sive Bibliotheca Librorum Qvos Photivs Patriarcha Constantinopolitanus legit et censuit'. 1624+104 columns + 23 pages Photius (c. 810/820 - 893), one of the most powerful and influential church leaders of Constantinople, is also viewed as the most important intellectual of his time. His house was the centre of intellectual life in the Byzantine capital. The Myriobyblon contains abridgements and extracts of some 280 volumes of classical authors, the originals of which are now to a great extent lost and for which this is the most important surviving record The discovery of the manuscript of Photius Biblioteca in the Vatican Library, to which this edition is based, was a major discovery and provided unique information about the Ancient Greek world. Although this was just a small part of Photius original work (comprised of 280 volumes!), the manuscript still remains the main source for many minor Ancient Greek geographers and travelers of the ancient world. Several very early accounts of ancient travels and ancient geography had been first published with the publication of Myriobiblon in the 17th century. A major contribution to the preservation of Ancient Greek knowledge and culture
