Theodore Gerard (1829-1895) - Happy family

Sublime piece by Theodor Gerard. Oil on a mahogany panel 71 x 56 cm. It has a beautiful new Filippo frame. Work is clean and varnished. It looks like it originally had wooden slats, the front is intact. In the 1990s, this piece was sold at Sotheby's London for a total amount of about 70,000 guilders (around 32000 euro). See the pictures. The details are great. The thread that runs over the cat. The curious dog and the children's faces. Almost too sweet but very nicely painted. Shipping is possible at the buyer’s own risk. Belgian painter who produced and sold a lot in his time. On the basis of four original sketch books that the Municipal Museum Melle as if by chance was able to acquire in 1994, the following summer exhibition 2002 will evoke the life and work of this artist that was died and buried in our municipality. This entry in our magazine can perhaps once give rise to the publication of a genuine monograph about this quite famous artist. Incidentally, through some of his children, various current Melse families are related to Théodore Gerard (see below in this article). We would also like to refer to an interesting contribution that appeared in the magazine of the communal credit (48th year no. 190, 1994/4) under the title ‘De moderne and hedendaagse Belgische schilderkunst, evolutie van de prijzen in de internationale verkopen 1962-1992’ by the authors Victor Ginsburgh and Sophie Mertens. In summary, this taught us, based on the data of most sales rooms around the world and all public sales of work of 206 Belgian artists have painted in 1830 and the aforesaid period, 68 paintings by Théodore Gerard were traded; in comparison, 73 pieces of Valerius De Saedeleer and 61 of Fritz Van den Berghe. Less than a sixth of T. Gerards’ work was traded during this period in Belgium, the bulk was sold in foreign sales rooms. In the Belgian sales, he was in 41st place in regards of the financial side of the things. Quite a proper positioning.
