Veronica-Schleier - Kupferradierung (1) - Linoleum

VERA EFFIGIES SACRI VULTUS DOMINI NOSTRI JESU CHRISTI. QUAE ROMAE IN SACROSANTA BASILICA S. PETRI IN VATICANO RELIGIOSISSIME ASSERVATUR ET COLITUR. Papal seal in sealing wax, at the bottom right. Dirt traces at the margins, coeval frame, needs work in some areas. Good impression and good state of preservation of the fabric bearing the image, the seal has a small shortcoming on the perimeter. This is a reproduction of the "veil of Veronica"which can be found in the Vatican Basilica. It features a sealing wax stamp. According to antique Christian and non-Christian traditions reported in the Gospels, the “Veil of Veronica” is a piece of cloth used by a woman (Saint Veronica) to dry Jesus sweat while he was walking the way to His Crucifixion. The effigy of Jesus remained impressed in the cloth. The Shroud or Holy Face is also known as the “Veil of Veronica” or simply called the “Veronica.” There is one kept at the St.Peter’s Basilica in Vatican, one at the Monastery of SS. Cosmas and Damian in Tagliacozzo (L’Aquila), one at the Matilda Chapel in Vatican, more at the Monasterio de la Sanya Faz in Alicante and the one kept at the Capuchin monastery of Manoppello (Pescara). The custom of reproducing this relic dates back to the miracle occurred in Vatican in 1849, when, exposed to the faithful, the veil became extraordinarily vivid and bright. Since then, every year for about 50 years, reproductions of the veil on linen or silk were created and offered to the faithful on occasion of the exhibitions to the public planned every Sunday of the Passion. The reproductions authorized by the Vatican, was originally placed the papal or a cardinal seal in wax or sealing wax, later was used the seal of the Holy Face Arch confraternity. Actually even more Holy face relics exist, created in Vatican in the early 1700, late 1800, but those are extremely rare. Tracked shipping via express courier.
