In the late 19th century, the Art Nouveau or Jugendstil movement emerged, with artists from all over the world standing up against neoclassicism or neo-Gothicism. This movement was echoed shortly thereafter in the fashion world and had a great influence on women's fashion and the emancipation of women. The rise of suffragettes and their struggle for the right to vote dates back to the same period. Women, unlike men, played a very significant role in Art Nouveau. They were represented much more often than men and in a very feminine way. There was a lot of emphasis on round, feminine shapes and loose, wavy hair. There were two types of women: the "flower woman", the innocent, dancing flower girl, and the "femme fatale", the seducer of men. This woman with seagull is hand-painted in warm pastel colours, the patina reflects its age. This antique French statue is in good condition, with the usual signs of wear. As you can see in the pictures there are some very small chips in the paint, they are discreet and contribute to the antique look of this vintage home decoration.
