(Cerchia di) Carlo Francesco Nuvolone - Allegoria della carità

Antique painting, oil on canvas, XVII century, depicting an allegory of Charity. This splendid and evocative painting, quite faithfully follows the allegory of charity by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1609-1662), produced by the artist between 1630 and 1650 and published in the dedicated monograph by Filippo Maria Ferro (Nuvolone. Una famiglia di pittori nella Milano del '600, 2003, p. 210). Great expressive intensity and emotion but also balance and tenderness blend in this pictorially perfect scene. The importance and quality of this splendid work must have certainly yielded a great success at the time of its creation, being replicated by the artist and his workshop in more than one version: in this sense we want to highlight the painting auctioned by Finarte, Milan, on November 20, 2001, lot no. 43 and the one auctioned by Bloomsbury, Rome, on November 19, 2009, lot no. 44. The excellent quality and the easy and loose drawing of this canvas seem to direct the research of the author towards an artist who knew the works of the master well. The analysis of the cracks also suggests a dating compatible with the period of the artist's activity. We therefore believe that the painting can be traced back to an artist in close contact with the master, to be found most likely among the students that worked in his workshop. In fairly good overall condition, considering the age of the painting, a few scattered restorations and some peeling of the surface, mainly on the background. Fine craquelure compatible with age, no conservation problems, the original canvas does not appear to have been relined, reinforcement strips along the four sides of the stretcher, which has been most likely replaced around the late XIX / early XX century. Framed with beautiful and quite recent box frame, which is golden and lacquered, decorated with leaves pattern. Canvas size: 125.5 x 95.5 cm. Frame size: 144 x 114 cm. With photographic certificate of authenticity, in accordance with the current law. Shipping via insured express courier, packaged with the utmost care. #ExclusiveArtweek
