This fine weapon started out in life as the French Chassepot rifle and was adapted into the Fusil "Gras" MLE 1874 in 1874 for the French Army. It was then further modified into the M80 in 1880. Finally it was converted to a 16 mm calibre hunting rifle
It was manufactured by "Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne" (MAS) which can be clearly seen on the left side of the bolt housing along with "MLE 1874" and "M80" embossed on it.
The forestock appears to of been shortened at some point, but the rifle itself is in overall very good condition for its age. There are obvious signs of wear and age to the metal and wood, which can be seen in the photos provided.
The action is in working order and the trigger fires the bolt when armed.
There are various initials and numbers embossed on the housing and barrel which can be seen in the photos provided.
