From the 1960s onwards, Olivetti Synthesis began to produce furniture that was designed to be modular and composable. The new strategy was to produce not only filing cabinets and binders, elements that had made the company successful before the war, but also supports for office machines, desks, shelves, bookcases, chairs, armchairs and so on[1]. The first example of the new company policy was the Spazio Series. The Spazio Series entered the market in 1960 and was designed by architects Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers, i.e. Studio BBPR. The series represents a departure from traditional office furniture and is designed to suit any office, especially those based on the open space layout that was becoming popular at the time. In 1962 the Spazio Series was awarded the Compasso d'Oro. The Spazio Series desk is on display at the MOMA in New York. The lot at auction is presented in original condition. The desk is perfectly solid, functional and complete. The signs of time, however, are all there: there are two cuts on the re-glued vinyl leather surface and several stains on the metal parts. The desk has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared in conservation mode and is therefore ready for use. Dimensions - Height:78 cm - Width: 196 cm - Depth: 81 cm.
