Honoré d'Urfé /Daniel Rabel - L'Astree De Messire Honoré D'Vrfé Gentil-Homme Ordinaire de la Chambre du Roy, - 1624
Einbände, Illustriert, Literatur - Anzahl: 10 - Buch

A rare complete copy of the Astrée, Honoré d'Urfé's masterpiece in 5 parts in 12 books each, here in 10 volumes. A major literary work of the 17th century, the Astrée is sometimes referred to as the "novel of novels".

A composite copy with at least three early editions, 1624, 1634 and 1647.

The volumes of the 1647 edition include the delightful copper-engraved illustration by Daniel Rabel.

Set rebound in 10 green full vellum bindings of the 18th century, with extensive restorations. Stains on the vellum of some bindings. Containing several handwritten pages, reproducing the text of the missing leaves. Some foxing and faded leaves, the insides are otherwise fresh and clean, very nice legibility.

Volume 1: (4 unnumbered pp. of title - frontispiece and title page in red and black) 5-16, 1,388 leaves (being 776 pages, first part, complete).
Volume 2: edition of 1630, missing title page, 5 ff., 490 pp. (second part, books 1 to 6).
Volume 3: from 491 to 1018 + 4 pp. of table of the first part (second part, books 7 to 12), water stains and foxing, without loss of text.
Volume 4: edition of 1647, missing the frontispiece and a fragment of the title page, 10 ff., 576 pp., including portrait and 6 plates.
Volume 5: 557 to 1221, 3 pages of table, including 5 engravings (end of the third part).
Volume 6: edition of 1634, 8 ff., 436 pp., including 2 portraits (fourth part, books 1-5).
Volume 7: 437-928 (fourth part, books 6-9).
Volume 8: 929-1338 (fourth part, books 10-12), the last 4 pages are handwritten (some faded leaves).
Volume 9: missing frontispiece and title page, 6 ff., 484 pp., including 5 engravings (fifth part, books 1-6).
Volume 10: 485 -914, including 5 engravings (fifth part, books 7-12) + 38 handwritten pages, replicating the missing leaves.

The text appears to be complete.

“Trudon” bookplate, repeated on the top of several leaves.
