Dante Con nuove e utili isposizioni. Aggiuntovi di più una tavola di tutti i vocaboli più degni d’osservazione, che ai luoghi loro sono dichiarati. In Lyone appresso Guglielmo Rovilio, 1552

Small 8vo; 644, [12] pages., Signature a-z1-8 (first two leaves misnumbered), A-R1-8, S1-2, *3-8 (the last 6 leaves belong to S but are numbered with *); woodcut vignette on title page, small woodcut portrait of Dante, 3 full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary brown calf, gilt medallion inscribed into double gilt fillets on both covers (faded), hinges skilfully restored, a very fresh and well margined copy with printing mirror entirely “reglè”. An intriguing copy in contemporary binding, rare on the market.

Delightful and uncommon edition of Dante’s Divina Commedia, printed in Lyon in small size by Guillaume Rouillé (1518-1589), a former pupil of Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari. One of the most prominent humanist bookseller-printers in 16th-century Lyon, he established his business in this city in 1545. Rouillé invented the pocket book format called the sextodecimo.

Rouillé published four editions of Dante in Lyon, the first one in 1551, the present one in 1552 and two more in 1571 and 1575. Rouillé “had his books printed by master printers, forming short-term partnerships with them for specific editions. A great number of his editions were adorned with portraits and vignettes which if not always of high quality, contributed nevertheless to spread the use of illustrations in books produced in France. One of the engravers who worked most frequently with him, Pierre Vase (Eskreich), is probably responsible for the frontispiece portrait of Dante and the three vignettes at the head of each of the three cantiche which illustrate Rovillé's Dante editions.” (Italnet). The commentary, as stated by Rouillé himself, is largely based on Vellutello’s, from the 1544 Venetian edtion; also the illustrations are inspired to the ones produced by Marcolini for the same 1544 edition.
