Alphonse Mucha (after), 2 x - The Seasons & Bieres de la Meuse - 2006 reproduction

Alfons Maria Mucha (Czech: 24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939), known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. Living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, he was widely known for his distinctly stylized and decorative theatrical posters, particularly those of Sarah Bernhardt. He produced illustrations, advertisements, decorative panels, as well as designs, which became among the best-known images of the period. The Seasons, published in 1896, served as the first series Mucha produced during his time with Champenois. The Seasons depicted four different women in floral settings representing the seasons of the year: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Each panel was sized 103 × 54 cm. Each of the seasons has a characteristic flair to their allegorical depictions. Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter are portrayed as innocent, sultry, fruitful, and frosty, respectively. The Bieres de la Meuse poster is the same size. This poster portrays a woman with a wreath of poppies, wheat and hops in her hair holding a pint of beer. She has Slav features and recalls the figure of Summer from Mucha's Seasons series of the previous year. The poster incorporates two images at the bottom of the poster that are by another artist: an image of the goddess of the river Meuse and a bird’s eye view of the brewery.
