Andrew Warhola (Pittsburgh, 6th of August 1928 – 22nd of February 1987), commonly known as Andy Warhol, was an American plastic artist and filmmaker who played a crucial role in the birth and development of pop art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde film and literature, a notoriety that was supported by a skilful relationship with the media and his role as a modern guru. Warhol acted as a liaison between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians and quaint urban characters. Among his influences: Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom de Finlandia o Jack Smith. Warhol used different media to create his works, such as hand drawing, painting, engraving, photography, screen printing, sculpture, film, and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, contains an extensive permanent collection of art. It turns out to be the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist. He was a controversial character during his life - some critics described his works as pretentious or practical jokes - and since his death in 1987 he has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books and documentaries. Aside from fame and controversy, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century due to his revolutionary works.
