Signed; Hiroshi Sugimoto - Portraits - 2000

Great exhibition catalogue book by Hiroshi Sugimoto - mainly with photographs of famous people from wax museums. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at "Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin" in 2000. Signed by the artist. I GUARANTEE THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE SIGNATURE. IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 OF MY BOOKS IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. "The 'Portraits' series are life-size black and white portraits of historical figures, photographed by Sugimoto against a dramatically lit black background. He detaches the wax figures from their staging, lets them pose in a three-quarter perspective and illuminates them in the chiaroscuro of a Rembrandt painting. His painterly allusions are full of detail and are reminiscent of paintings by David, van Dyck, Holbein, Vermeer and da Vinci, which often served as models for the wax figures. With these photographs, Sugimoto revives a discussion that has not lost its importance since the invention of photography: the relationship between painting and the medium of technical reproduction." Guggenheim Museum, New York. Hatje Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. 2000. First German edition, first printing. Paperback. 280 x 305 mm. 170 pages. 75 photos. Photos: Hiroshi Sugimoto. Layout: Takaaki Matumoto Matsumoto Incorporated, NY. Printed in Italy by Eurografica. Text: Nancy Spector, Tracy Bashkoff, Carol Armstrong, Norman Bryson und Thomas Kellein. Text in German. Condition: Inside and outside fresh and clean with no marks, with no foxing; excepted first title page which is yellowed (the yellow comes from the rear side of the front cover, so a production thing), otherwise just normal trace of use with no (other) remarkable flaws or defects. Overall very good condition. Great photobook by Hiroshi Sugimoto - signed by the artist. Hiroshi Sugimoto is famous for spectacular photobooks like "Time Exposed", "Theaters" and "Sea of Buddha" (Martin Parr, The Photobook vol 1, page 308/309. The Open Book, Hasselblad Center, page 390/391. 802 photobooks from the Auer Collection, page 757).
