"The 'Portraits' series are life-size black and white portraits of historical figures, photographed by Sugimoto against a dramatically lit black background. He detaches the wax figures from their staging, lets them pose in a three-quarter perspective and illuminates them in the chiaroscuro of a Rembrandt painting. His painterly allusions are full of detail and are reminiscent of paintings by David, van Dyck, Holbein, Vermeer and da Vinci, which often served as models for the wax figures. With these photographs, Sugimoto revives a discussion that has not lost its importance since the invention of photography: the relationship between painting and the medium of technical reproduction."
