Alberto Schommer - La Vida. La Habana, 1994 - 1996

FANTASTIC BIG-FORMAT BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK by Alberto Schommer - showing his "Havana" (Cuba) in 1994. The book is dedicated by Alberto Schommer to Walker Evans and his work "L'Havana 1933". IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 OF MY BOOKS IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. 140 gorgeous quadratone photographs de Havana. These images, moving and vibrant yet sweetly fragile, were taken during four short trips in which photographer, Alberto Schommer immersed himself in this seductive capital, taking over 3,000 pictures and then carefully choosing these 140 images. From the famed Floridita bar, birthplace ofthe daiuiri, to the sultry sands of its famed beaches; from the decaying majesty of its splendid architecture to the remarkable spirit of its people - all are stunningly captured by Schommer's discerning eye. "I didn't want a book that would give an insight into the dictatorial past and present history. I didn't want to convince the viewer of this or that. It seemed almost impossible for me to stay on the outside and not let my influence flow too much into the pictures so as not to appear touristy. But in the end I managed to be alone in this work, thanks to an attitude that I would like to call "maximum honesty". I let myself be guided mainly by feelings, by a great intuition that characterised my preparations and the search for motifs with rather minimal effort. I didn't work much with the "prepared eye", but with the photographer's eye, which I would like to call the third eye. A triangle that for me consists of the eye, heart and sex and the hand that serves as the triggering machine. It was this constellation that allowed me to see with that - so human - universal lens, which consists partly of our eyes and gazes and which has "thirty-five millimetres". - Alberto Schommer - Blue Book Verlag, Hamburg. 1996. First German edition, first printing. Originally published in Spain by Caja de Madrid, Madrid. Also published by Overlook Press, Woodstock, New York. Hardcover in linen with original dustjacket. 370 x 295 mm. 154 pages. Photos: Alberto Schommer. Edited by Christian Voigt. Text: German. Condition: Book with some trace of use and with some stains. Dustjacket complete with no tears and with no missing parts; with trace of use, with some scratches and with some stains from behind. Overall very good condition. Great photobook with the original dustjacket - scarce.
