Born in Sri Lanka – home to the Ceylon sapphire, among many other exquisite gemstones – Mushtaq credits his love of jewellery to many influences. His family, for instance, has been in the gem and jewellery trade for several generations. As a child, his grandfather would tell him stories about gems and their energies. Those stories instilled in him a deep appreciation for the awesome beauty of gems, the process of their creation and the connectivity of their energies. Mushtaq worked for over a decade in the family jewellery retail business making contact with local miners, cutters, polishers and goldsmiths. He then shifted his focus to develop the sustainability side of the trade, working collectively with miners and goldsmiths to create bespoke pieces for clients. The collective continued to thrive as Mushtaq left Sri Lanka to start the next chapter of his career. Now based in Europe, Mushtaq is able to share his wisdom and love of gemstones with buyers and sellers at Catawiki. As Expert in New Jewellery & Gemstones, he likes knowing that an object sold will become a family heirloom – a treasure. For him, helping people fulfil their passions through special objects is the gift that keeps giving.
