Antique Italian Crossbow - Umbria, Gubbio

The word “Palio” refers to traditional races, held periodically since Medieval times, where the winner would get as a prize a piece of fine embroidered cloth. In many cities, the Palio was linked to the traditional hose race, while in others, the name was linked to archery or crossbow competitions. The Crossbow Palio [1] is currently held on the last Sunday of May in Gubbio and the second Sunday of September in Sansepolcro. This event, with rules similar to other competitions held in over twenty Italian cities, takes place every year since the 15th century. The Crossbow shooting Palio is organised by the Società Balestrieri di Gubbio and Società Balestrieri di Sansepolcro, among other festivities in honour of the Patron Saints of Gubbio and Sansepolcro, respectively Saint Ubaldo and Saint Egidio. The competition consists in hitting the target, called Corniolo or Tasso with an arrow shot with a crossbow at a distance of 36 metres. As dramatic backdrop to the Palio, the historic procession with over four hundred participants dressed in medieval (Gubbio) and Renaissance costumes (Sansepolcro), manufactured according to the frescoes of Piero della Francesca, Italian painter born in Sansepolcro. In excellent condition, bought in the 1970s at an antique store in Umbria. No replica, no imitation, no made in China. Functional and very well kept.
