Antique Selenus ivory chess set + Sorrento/tunbridge gameboard.

This elegant and rare, late 18th early 19th Century white natural ivory + stained black ivory Selenus pattern chess set. The Selenus style is named after a book on chess published in Leipzig in the year 1616 under the name Gustavus Selenus. Gustavus Selenus was a pen name for Augustus Younger, Duke of Brunswick - Luneburg. In the book where tiny sketches of simular chess pieces. Selenus chess pieces feature tall slender shafs topped with tiers of florally inspired designs. This fabulous chess set comes with a antique circa 1820 San Remo (Italian) Tunbridge/Sorrento ware chess board. On one side of the board a chess board inlaid, with saw-tooth inlaid edging,to the board. And futher a decorative Tunbridge ware outher border. On the other side a Sorrento ware inlaid scene of a figural group of six people, dancing and playing music. Around this scene is a complex micro mosaic Tunbridge band around, under the figural group musisians the text; San Remo ( acity in Italy) surounded by an array of complex and intricate Tunbridge/Sorrento ware borders. The beautiful craftmanship and painstaking level of detail make this wooden game board a work of art. Condition; The game board is missing some pieces of fineer/inlaid wood, the 200 year old game board is in used condition, see photos. The chess set is in overall good condition; a chip of the ear of the white horse is missing, the black queen is missing a little piece on top. The black and white bishops are difrent, i think this is original. The provider ensures that this item is antique ivory, made before 1947 and there fore permitted under CITES- regulations.
