The Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch machines are one of the most collected sewing machines of all time. Some say the sewing machine represents the finest piece of '19th Century' precision engineering in the world. Willcox & Gibbs hand-operated portable sewing machine, metal / paint, made by Brown and Sharpe, Providence, Rhode Island, for Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company, New York, New York, USA, 1884 The sewing machine has a cast iron mechanism that has been Japanned black. The sewing machine head is in the form of an open ring forming the letter 'G'. Gilt transfers of stylised leaves and flowers have been applied to the base and sides. The machine is hand powered and designed to stand on a table. A brass plate attached to the unit is stamped 'WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, NEW YORK'. Dim.. Lg. 32 / Hg. 26,5 / Br. 20 cm.
