The sewing machine has a cast iron mechanism that has been Japanned black. The sewing machine head is in the form of an open ring forming the letter 'G'. Gilt transfers of stylised leaves and flowers have been applied to the base and sides. The machine is hand powered and designed to stand on a table. A brass plate attached to the unit is stamped 'WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, NEW YORK'.
