Anthony the Abbot (Antony the Great, Antony the Hermit, Antony with the pig) was born in Egypt in c. 251.
He is depicted with the attributes crucifix, book with order regulation and pig. That pig is a symbol of the sinful and the temptation and also has to do with the right of the anthonites to allow a certain number of pigs to roam freely in the cities.
Anthony is the patron saint of the poor, sick, butchers, shepherds, gardeners, pigs and pig herders.
His help was called upon against plague, scurvy, sores, warts and boils.
