Baureihe 18.4-6 (Bayer. S3/6). This four-cylinder compound locomotive was built by the Maffei firm from 1908 for the Königlich Bayerische Staatseisenbahnen. Approximately 150 were built, in different subseries. At the DRG, they were numbered as the series 18.4-5. These remained in service until the 1950s. Thirty of these locomotives remained in service for a while longer; these were fitted with a new boiler and a new engineer’s cab (DB Series 18.6). In the early 1960s, these were also taken out of service. According to the numbering scheme of the Bavarian Railways, the locomotives were referred to as S 3/6. In doing so, the S stands for Schnellzug, the 3 for the number of axles powered, and the 6 for the total number of axles of the locomotive.
