Dagger - Asmat - West-Papua (New Guinea)
A large and excellent bone dagger, measuring 37.7cm in length and weighing 168g, carved from the thigh bone of the cassowary, probably the most dangerous bird in the world. Woven decoration includes beads and feathers of the cassowary. These daggers were ornamental and status symbols, in former times (19th century) they would have been carved from human thigh bone and used in battle, up until the Dutch colonial government outlawed headhunting.
Irian Jaya, circa 1950. Old collector´s label to the reverse.
Provenance: From the estate of the recently deceased Danish artist Borge Christiansen (1945-2023), who was an avid collector of ecclectic pieces from all over the world
Condition: Good, no damages or repairs. Minor wear commensurate with age, feathers slightly crumbling from age.
