Dimensions of both hemispheres are 23 cm and that of the smaller one is 11 cm. This rare and unique double hemisphere map is manufactured by the famous Dutch engraver, printer and publisher "Frederick de Wit (1630 – 1703). The object is a beautiful stereographic projection of the world from the 17th century and is richly decorated with 24 k gold leaf. This map is beautifully decorated with cartouches in the corners. The brilliantly worked-out scenes in the corners are a combination in which mythology and astronomy are linked to the four seasons. See the photos. This print dates back to 1670 and reflects the not yet fully discovered earth. These not yet discovered parts are indicated with LOCA INCOGNITA or TERRA ESONIS. (See the photos) Parts of Australia and New Zealand are still undiscovered. For example, only the South coast of Greenland is discovered. Australia bears the name 'Nova Hollandia', and California is shown as an island. For more information, have a look at the photos.
