Vase in carved melon design - Christina Naranjo (1892-1980) - Pueblo - U.S.

This vase with a carved melon design is signed by Christina Naranjo (1892-1980, daughter of Sara Fina Tafoya). She was the founder and matriarch of one of the most noted Native American clay families in K'apovi (Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico). This pot is heavy with thick walls. As other works of Christina Naranjo, following the Native American pottery traditions, it was coiled, stone polished and fired in an open fire. Black pieces with highly burnished surfaces are typical of Santa Clara Pueblo productions. There is no catalogue to date Christina Naranjo's works. It was very probably produced in the mid-XXth century. Christina Naranjo is a highly-prized artist. Her works are displayed in several museums in the US, including the Smithsonian, and in specialized art galleries. It is a rare opportunity to purchase one of her works. This vase is in a good state, no crack. Some wear due to use and age are visible on the pictures. Carefully packed and tracked parcel.
