Puppet Marka, Bambara - Wood, Cauri shells, Metal - Second half 20th century
This is a Vintage Marka Figure Puppet from Mali. Marka are famous for their masks and puppets. This puppet is a ceremonial puppet and decorated with brass hammered metal and cowrie shells. A puppet like this is used in ceremonies related to the circumcision of adolescents and in theatrical performances. Like folktales and other theatrical forms, this puppet performance shows cultural and social values, as well as is used in a play that shows the relationship between two wives, a good and a bad wife and their husband. This is a wonderful puppet and would be a great addition to your collection.
