Ancient Chinese Ceramic Tile

A Chinese Song Dynasty terracotta tile presenting three figures in high relief. The female figure on the left is wearing a reddish long, voluminous robe with her one hand held to the chest. The male figure on the right is depicted wearing a white tunic and holding one hand near the mouth, as if he is covering a smile or drinking from a cup. Between them is another female figure viewed from behind, possibly kneeling in front of the male figure, and dressed in a similar long, voluminous robe. Unfortunately her head is now missing due to age. The reverse of the tile is undecorated. The Song Dynasty ruled China during one of its most brilliant and sophisticated cultural epochs, marking a high point for innovation in economy, science, engineering, and warfare. The Dynasty saw the introduction of the first banknotes and the first recorded chemical formula for gunpowder, as well as large-scale experimental architecture and a new intellectual interest in the arts. Measurements: L 25.3cm x W 23.7cm x H 5cm Provenance: Acquired 1970s-1990s. Hong Kong collection. Ex West Country collection, UK
