Ancient Roman Bronze Mirror
A beautiful example of an everyday Roman artefact, this mirror would have once been a coveted possession of its owner. The mirror is made of cast bronze and has a simple, unadorned, design. The elegantly curved round body would have been polished to a brilliant shine, allowing for its reflective properties to be fully utilised. The item is now covered by a thick layer of green patination and earthy encrustation.
Mirrors were highly valued by individuals of Ancient Rome, on account of the importance given to appearance and grooming. Bronze mirrors would have been present in every aristocratic household, but also buried with the deceased as a grave good.
Measurements: Diameter - Circa 7.7cm
Provenance: Ex Collection of a deceased Japanese gentleman, collection acquired 1970-2010.
