"Michael Schmidt invited a number of American photographers such as William Eggleston, Larry Clark, Lewis Baltz and John Gossage to Berlin where they made work and gave workshops. Made in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ahnung is concerned with "the sense of uncertainty that the advent of this brave new world might generate, and also about how colour photographs can be made to reflect feelings rather than just documenting the superficial aspect of things."
(Gerry Badger)
The "Workshop for Photography" was founded in 1976 by Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt at the Kreuzberg Adult Education Centre. It had a major influence on photography in Germany. In those years, structures emerged in West Germany that were to pave the way for the emancipation of photography as an art form. In addition to documenta 6 (1977), these included the first photo galleries and photography magazines as well as several pioneering exhibitions. The cities of Berlin, Hanover and Essen played a central role in this development. At that time in the 1970s and 80s, the medium of photography underwent a fundamental change in Germany, and an independent form of artistic authorship developed in the field of documentary photography.
