Daarnaast schilderde hij het landschap rond Den Haag. De kunstenaar werd in 1856 in Leiden geboren en kreeg zijn eerste schilderlessen van zijn vader, Jan Hendrik van Rossum du Chattel. Daarna bezocht hij in Den Haag de 'Teekenschool' en werkte op het atelier van Willem Maris.
