Pierre Massuet is a French scholar, born at Mouzon on 10 November 1698, died in Lankeren, near Amersfoort, on 6 October 1776. At eighteen, he pronounced his vows and entered the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Vincent de Metz. He soon fled to the Netherlands and converted to Protestantism. He studied medicine in Leiden and was appointed doctor in 1729. He then moved to Amsterdam and studied science (physics, mathematics, astronomy), philosophy and history. He also collaborated in the Rational Library of the works of the learned of Europe, especially from 1741 to the death of the publication in July 17531. Thus, through his many publications, he has largely participated in the dissemination of the knowledge of his time.
