Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children. Later they became popular souvenirs and real decorative items, for some even collector items. Vintage Kokeshi dolls which are estimated to have been created in the late 1970 or early 1980s. The Kokeshi craft is an ancient Japanese tradition that started as early as the year 1850.
