Ancient Roman Gold Pendant with Green Stone

A fabulous Ancient Roman gold pendant with a vibrant green stone inlay. The pendant is drop-shaped with a tapering point and rounded body. The base is formed of a thin flat sheet of gold framed by coil and braided gold bands . At the tip sits three gold granules of varying sizes, arranged vertically. The suspension loop at the top features three vertical raised ridges with three small granules attached to the front. In the centre of the piece is a raised rectangular bezel, within which sits a stunning polished green stone. There are traces of white paste around the bezel, suggesting the inlay might have been reset. The reverse of the pendant is flat and undecorated. There is some discolouration to the gold consistent with age, and some small dents in the base plate. As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth. Following the spread of the Roman Empire, Roman jewellery became more and more elaborate in the designs and in the materials used, such as precious and semi-precious gemstones. Roman jewellery reflected the culture the Romans entered in contact with, and testified the prosperity and the power of the Roman Empire. Rings were the most popular pieces of Roman jewellery, usually embellished with fine carving. Measurements: Circa H 3.5cm x W 1.8cm Weight: 2.35g Provenance: From an Ex Japanese gentleman's (deceased) private collection, formed 1970s-2010.
