Clacquesin is made from an infusion of Norwegian pine resin in alcohol, with the addition of caramelized sugar and spices, including cinnamon and cloves. The drink has an alcohol content between, 22 to 28°
Le Clacquesin, which was created by Paul Claquesin Herbalist Pharmacist won a medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, enjoyed increasing success on this occasion.
From 1903 onwards, production, which until then had been carried out in the Rue du Dragon in Paris, was transported to a factory located in Malakoff.
This aperitif was very popular during the 1920s and 1930s (5 million litres per year). Paul Clacquesin's wife, Pauline, engaged in intensive advertising to promote the product, which was also described as "hygienic tar".
Production was stopped in 1942.
